2009: A Brief Round-up

2009 promised to be one of the computer game industries most memorable years. But then Activision announced Modern Warfare 2's release date and everyone shat themselves and held back till 2010.

Still though it’s not been a bad year for gaming, in fact it’s been pretty darn spiffing.

Here are some of the best games of 2009.

Uncharted 2 (PS3)

Uncharted 2 pits you as Nathan Drake, a charming explorer in what is probably the best action adventure game ever made. The voice acting is on par with some of Hollywood's finest and the graphics are arguably the best we've seen so far this generation. Everything about it screams quality from start to finish, the only criticism being that the end is far sooner than you would like.

Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360/PS3/Wii)

People have claimed MW2 was a bit of let down but the sorry truth is that it was always going to be a victim of its own hype. The campaign is fantastic while it lasts, running through Brazil's favela's equipped with double sawn off shotguns with bullets flying by creates a buzz that few games can match. It is clear however that the campaign is only there to complement the multiplayer which is where its at and it delivers an acutely fine tuned experience, just as you would expect.

Assassins Creed 2 (Xbox 360/PS3)

As much as people like to claim Assassins Creed was great, it really wasn't. It had the potential for greatness, but the repetition was too severe to ignore. Cue what is quite possibly one of the easiest sequels ever made. The blueprints were always there, Ubisoft just needed to take some of the criticisms on board and that's precisely what they've done. Assassins Creed 2 is every bit the game the first one should have been and a serious contender for game of the year.

Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360/PS3)

When Capcom announced it was going back to its beloved Street Fighter franchise fans everywhere rejoiced. In the last few years the series has stagnated somewhat, but with SF IV however Capcom managed to reinvent the series yet retain everything that made SF so unique in its early days. Rarely has their been a fighter so challenging, rewarding and accessible at the same time. SF IV remains a highlight in the series and single-handedly rejuvenated the whole genre.

New Super Mario Bros Wii (Wii)

Mario goes back to its 2D roots and allows us to finally experience what we've pined for for years, four player platforming. Its such a rarity that a Mario game disappoints and their is no exception here. Admittedly the game plays better the less people are playing, which is a shame, but whether your playing with mates or on your own there's still an awful lot of fun to be had.
